It was a beautiful Sunday morning, the rain had stopped falling before dawn, so everywhere seemed cozy and damp. I had no plans to go for morning mass because of the heavy downpour the previous night and the fact that I was far from home. All I wanted was to stay in Tony’s room all day, do some acrobatics and leave Tony’s family house the next day.
Tony had left the previous day which was a Saturday and since I had gone with his family members to bid him goodbye, I decided to spend the weekend there even though my boyfriend had left.
It was already 8am on Sunday when I rushed to the kitchen to prepare breakfast; five minutes into what I was doing, I started hearing voices coming from the living room..
The kitchen and living room were just a wall apart, so I could hear them talk.
I stood close to the kitchen door perflexed and frightened, thinking of the next action to take without getting hurt. I had turned off the lights in the living room the previous night, but forgot to turn them on that morning. I was scared at first but for a moment, the thought of other people being around reassured me of safety.
Even though there was an assurance of safety, I couldn’t stop thinking still about a way to protect myself should the worst was to happen. Lost in thoughts I heard a man whisper to someone I thought was his accomplice; “maybe they could be assassins or thieves.” I cried silently.
The noise stopped for a moment and my heart wouldn’t stop pounding so hard, I could feel my lymph glands close to my face when I heard another man in a cold hoarse voice from the living room, giving instructions to his colleagues to check the kitchen. “I think someone’s in there” the other man said.
Hearing the sound made me pant heavily and there was a rush of sweat pouring down my body, it felt like I had been in a marathon race for unstoppable hours “God please save me now” I whimpered.
I became even more scared and quickly rushed to where the kitchen utensils were kept, and without a second thought I picked up a knife. I had to protect myself, even if I was going to die, I didn’t want to die like a spring chicken in someone else’s house.
How would I save myself from this nightmare? Just how?. Look out for the next episode.
